In July 1952, a series of radar and visual sightings over Washington, D.C., transformed a UFO story into a national event. Air traffic controllers, radar operators, military personnel and airline crews reported unusual targets near the American capital on two consecutive weekends. Because radar was involved, the reports seemed to carry a level of technical authority that ordinary eyewitness accounts lacked. When radar put UFOs over Washington
The most famous events occurred on the nights of 19–20 July and 26–27 July 1952. Controllers at Washington National Airport detected unidentified radar returns that did not correspond to known aircraft.
